Make a Balloon Cake

A balloon cake fit for any birthday party...

I made this birthday cake with balloons for a friend's daughter's birthday. The 4 year old asked for a "simple plain cake with balloons on it!" Keeping this simple design request in mind, I set out to create this balloon cake. The process was quite easy and this was a very quick cake to make.

I was happy with the outcome and the recipient (my friend's little girl) was more than satisifed.

Balloon Cake I baked a plain square cake and covered with white fondant icing. I iced around the edges with green buttercream icing and decorated the sides with fondant-made stars.

For the balloons, I kneaded red and blue colouring (separately) into balls of fondant icing then shaped into balloons and placed on the cake. I brushed the back of the balloons with dissolved sugar and water to make them stick.

The balloon strings are made with orange writing gel - I bought some in a tube from the local supermarket.
