How to make an Easy Dinosaur Cake

This is a very easy Dinosaur Cake to make. Your kids will enjoy helping to make it too!

Dinosaur Cake

Easy Dinosaur Cake

Head down to K-Mart or Target and buy a packet of plastic dinosaurs.

You will need:

2 standard cake mixes (or double our Butter Cake recipe)
3 cups Butter Cream Icing
Food coloring - green, blue, brown
Almond or Fondant Icing (for trees)
Small dinosaur figures

How To Make It

You can either buy a ready-made 9"x13" sheet cake or do what I did which was to add two basic cake mixes together and bake in a large 9"x13" oblong cake tin.

Before I iced the cake I put it in the freezer for a couple of hours. This makes cutting and icing the cake a little less crumbly.

I also levelled off the top of the cake to make the surface flat rather than rounded on the edges. I left a little 'hill' in the corner for the volcano.

Tint the Butter Cream with the food coloring in a small bowl as desired. "Paint" green grass, brown dirt, or blue water to create a landscape. Add your dinosaur figures and any trees, volcanoes, or other landscaping to your cake.

I made a volcano using Almond Icing. Add brown food colouring (red & yellow mixed together) to the Almond Icing and knead in until colour is mixed through. Mould into the shape of a volcano and position in place on the still wet icing on the cake. For lava coming out of the volcano, I used tubed red icing gel.

Fondant Trees To make the trees, I kneaded some green food colouring into almond icing and cut into a leaf shape and wrapped around a chocolate flake. Moisten the edges of the leaves to stick together. I then put small holes in the top of the cake to place the trees in.
