Feed the parents at my son's birthday party?

by Lulu
(Townsville)

I'm having a birthday party for my five year old in two weeks.

I have had to cut costs right back and so far have managed quite well. My question is - what is the etiquette for feeding parents at your child's birthday party?

I have been to some where the parents stay and there have been some amazing spreads laid out for them. At other parties, the kids are dropped off and picked up after a couple of hours.

How do I get out of this one 'nicely' or 'cheaply'?

Kids Birthday Party Food - Not Parents
by: Anne Marie

When my kids were little I always accompanied them to their friends' birthday parties but now they're older, its more a case of dropping them off as I know the parents well now and feel okay about it.

So I agree about checking with the parents when they RSVP whether they're staying or not. There's nothing worse than making the food up for the adults if they're not staying.

Kids Birthday Parties are for kids, really.

Feed the parents at the birthday party
by: Teena

I agree about getting numbers when they rsvp to your kids birthday party.

In the past I've just made extra party food of whatever I make for the kids.

Parents can then mingle, set their kids food plate up and nibble some themselves (if they want).

This has worked for me. I don't mind feeding the parents but organising a kids birthday party is enough on its own without cooking extra 'grown-up' food.

I say feed the parents!

I would check with the parents when they rsvp whether they will be staying at your child's birthday party or not. This way you will have numbers for catering.

Most parties I've been to, the parents are happy with a drink and some nibblies - maybe some sandwiches or cheese 'n biccies.

It's nice to put on a spread but if you can't afford it, nibblies are fine (in my humble opinion).

This is what I've done in the past and I must say, when I go to my kids' friends parties, I'm happy nibbling from a plate of crisps as long as I have a cuppa!
