Outdoor Birthday Party Games
After some Outdoor Birthday Party Games?
Backyards and parks lend themselves easily to exciting treasure hunts and other exercise inducing games.
Of course this largely depends on the weather and where you live. So, if your next birthday party is at home, or even in a park, these outdoor birthday party games should get the kids exercising and hungry!
Treasure Hunt
Try this at the beginning of the party. Hide lollies, badges or small toys in the party for the children to find. Adapt the treasure to your theme.
Keep in mind that small children become disappointed quickly. Keep a few spare treasures in your pocket, so everyone will find something.
Balloon popping
You can put toys, fortunes, or matching puzzle pieces into balloons before you blow them up. The children then retrieve and pop several balloons and work to use or read or put together their treasures. Balloons can be hidden, hung, put into a big random box, floated on the ceiling with helium...
Stepping Stone
Stepping stones is a simple but fun outdoor birthday party game. All you need are two sheets of coloured paper per player. As each player steps forward, they must place a sheet of paper in front of their foot to step on to. Before they can step forward again they must lift up their back foot, pick up the piece of paper, and balance on one foot while placing hte paper in front again. It's not as easy as it sounds, especially if you make it a team race!
Balloon Twisting You can do this yourself instead of hiring an entertainer, with these easy instructions. Have a couple of easy shapes up your sleeve for the kids to try. You could even give out prizes for the 'most creative'. Kids love balloon twisting.
Follow the Leader
This is a good game for parties where there are children of different ages. The leader takes a line of children around the room, house or garden. As the leader makes a sound or action, the others have to follow. The children take turns at being the leader.
Fruit Roll Up (or Doughnuts) Race
Have an adult set this up while the other outdoor birthday party games are going on. Supplies: one fruit roll up (or doughnut) per child (remember to allow for siblings, etc.) string, and miniclothes pins (from good old Ikea). In an area that will allow space for each child to stand side by side e.g. under the clothes line, unroll and suspend fruit roll ups (or doughnuts)from a horizontal string, about at child head height. Secure with clothes pins. Children place hands behind back catch the end of fruit rollup in their mouths and eat. "Can't use your hands!"

Clean Up Your Room
Supplies needed: a lot of old socks. Ask children if they've ever been asked to clean up their room. In this game, you win when your side of the 'room' is clean. Children can be divided into two teams or even better, adults against kids since it's a pretty even ability game. Lay a rope or something to demarcate the dividing line. Everyone pelts them at the other team whilst yelling "Clean up Your Room!". This usually goes until everyone is too weak from laughing. The object is to get all the socks on the other side (never happens - just play until everyone collapses into sillies).
Grandmother's Footsteps
All the children except one stand behind a line. The child chosen to be the grandmother stands about 15 metres away with their back to the others. Children creep up on the grandmother, freezing when she turns. If she sees them move, they go back behind the line. The first one to reach grandmother takes her place in the next game.
Sardines
This is one of those kids games for active children to play in plenty of space. Choose a site for home base and a child to go and hide. The others stay at base and count to twenty. They then separate to search for the hidden person. As each child finds the hiding spot, they squeeze in sardine-like and wait for the others. When the last child arrives, everyone races back to home base. The last child to reach it is 'it' for the next game.
Bob for Apples
An oldie but a goodie. This outdoor birthday party game is great if your party is in summer. Have a wide shallow container full of apples. One at a time, the children need to try and get an apple out of the container.
Three Legged Race
This game is best held outdoors, preferably on a grassed area. Divide the party guests into pairs and tie them togther by the ankle (not too tight) using old ties or rope. Hold relay races in teams.
Wheelbarrow
This outdoor birthday party game is also best held outside on a grassed area. A wheelbarrow race is run in pairs. One person gets down on all fours while their partner picks them up by their ankles. When everyone is ready, they set off for the finish line, trying not to collapse!
Pinata
Hang the pinata securely from a tree or above head height of the children. Each player has a turn to break the pinata with 2 or 3 hits each, wielding a broom or piece of wooden dowel.
When the pinata breaks, the children scramble to collect as many lollies (or toys!) that have fallen from the broken pinata.
Tip 1: Have a spare bag of sweets and/or toys to make sure no-one misses out.
Tip 2: You can either make your own Pinata or buy one of the many varieties available.
Caution: Adult supervision is necessary to keep children a safe distance from the player swinging at the pinata.
