Children learn and have fun singing songs, especially if there is someone to imitate - it's a joyous form of self-expression.

Sing these favourite songs and encourage the party children to act out the words (or imitate you).

Go on, let the child in you free!

Ring o'Roses
Ring a ring o'roses,
A pocket full of posies,
A-tishoo, a-tishoo,
We all fall down.

There Were Ten in the Bed
There were ten in the bed
And the little one said
"Roll over! Roll over!"

So they all rolled over
And one fell out.

There were nine in the bed ... etc

Play this game to the accompanying song with ten children (or the number at the party) lying on the floor and one rolling out at the end of each verse.

Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush
Here we go round the mulberry bush
The mulberry bush
The mulberry bush
Here we go round the mulberry bush
On a cold and frosty morning.

This is the way we clap our hands
Clap our hands
Clap our hands
This is the way we clap our hands
On a cold and frosty morning.

This is the way we stamp our feet ... etc

Invent other actions.

Hokey Pokey
You put your left foot in
You put your left foot out
You put your left foot in and you shake it all about
You do the hokey pokey
And you turn yourself around
That's what it's all about

Chorus
Oh, hokey pokey, pokey
Oh, hokey pokey, pokey
Oh, hokey pokey, pokey
That's what it's all about.

Repeat the actions for the first verse with the right foot, legs, hands, head, body and whole self. Sing the chorus between each verse. (One of my favourite songs for childrens birthday parties)

I Wrote a Letter to My Love
I wrote a letter to my love
And on the way I dropped it,
One of you has picked it up and put it in your pocket.

The children sit in a circle with their hands behind their back and their eyes closed. One child carries a handkerchief and skips around the outside of the circle while the children sing the song. When the song is finished, the children open their eyes and feel behind them for the handkerchief. The child who finds it begins the next game.

Farmer in the Dell
The farmer in the dell
The farmer in the dell
Heigh-ho the derry o
The farmer in the dell.

The farmer takes a wife
The farmer takes a wife
Heigh-ho the derry o
The farmer takes a wife
The wife takes a child ... etc
The child takes a nurse ... etc
The nurse takes a dog ... etc
The dog takes a cat ... etc
The cat takes a rat ... etc
The rat takes the cheese ... etc
We all chase the cheese.

Choose a child to play the farmer. The other children hold hands, form a circle and sing. The farmer skips around the inside of the circle and chooses a wife who joins him in the circle. She then chooses a child and so on. At the end of the song everyone chases the cheese. (As songs for childrens birthday parties go, this is an oldie but a goodie)
