Top Party Tips for your Groovy Kids Birthday Party
I have gained some of these top party tips from personal experience.
Making lists before a party, then adding to it after the party -a bit back to front, I know, but it does serve as a lesson for organising my next party.
Some of the other tips have been gleaned from my surfing the internet and local libraries and reading other people's experiences and suggestions.
I have found, thankfully, that parents are more than willing to give away their top party tips!
I hope these top tips work for you - and if you have any more that you'd like to add to this list, please

Numbers
For a home party where space is limited anything from 6-12 children works well. In a hired venue you can invite the whole class!
A Timetable
A timetable is an essential birthday top party tip! In my experience the perfect party lasts 2 hours - 10 minutes to settle in, 1 hour to play, 20 minutes for tea, then 30 minutes of party games.
Play Music
The more funky the upbeat the better! It makes a huge difference to the atmosphere.
Children lose themselves in the games, while hopping to the music.
Safety Checklist
Parties are a time when there is a lot to be done and a large group of children to supervise. It's easy to let your attention stray from wandering children. There may also be extra toddlers and babies, such as siblings of guests, so take the time before the party to do a few safety checks - one of those necessary top party tips...
- Put any knives, sharp cooking utensils or garden equipment and tools in a safe place
- Check that garden and pool gates are locked
- Cover power points with safety covers
- Ensure bathroom cupboards, garden sheds or any areas containing cleaning products, points, paints etc are locked
- If there are babies or toddlers at the party, enclose a safe area for them. Put up safety gates across stairs and close all connecting doors to the party area
- Check that matches, keys, glass, valuables and handbags are well out of reach
- Be aware of potential sun damage. Use sunscreen. Provide hats and shaded areas for play
- Check before you start planning the food whether any children have any particular food or skin allergy
Party Bags
Going home treats in bags or boxes are part of the party ritual and make the event special for the children. Make the party bags before the party and fill with a mixture of toys, sweets and surprises. Remember to make an extra bag for any extra guests or siblings.
What to buy for your Party Bags

Decorations
Decorations are a must at any birthday party. They don't need to be expensive or complicated.
- Most children love balloons, except when they pop!
- Tie a bunch of balloons to the front door, on the front gate, or in a tree at the front of the house. You can decorate balloons with stickers or draw funny faces on them.
- Hang streamers around the room or garden.
- Decorate the inside of your house with your child's artwork.
The Table
Add some colour and fun to the table with bright paper party cups, table mats or a bright plastic tablecloth.
Tie balloons to each chair with the children's names on them.
Put a party hat and party blower at each place setting.
Accidents and Spills
Accidents are part of almost every child's birthday party.
But an accident or spill doesn't need to ruin the party. Have some cleaning rags and materials on hand just in case.
After the Party
Yep...it has to be done... clean-up! Make sure you have enough rubbish bags, vacuum cleaner, cleaning cloths and a rubbish bin to put it all in!
