What's a crumb coat?

by Sally
(Texas)

I have a recipe that says to 'crumb coat' my cake before decorating. What does this mean?

Crumb Coat
by: Mary-Lou (Editor)

A crumb coat is basically a thin layer of icing once your cake has been cooled (or thawed from being frozen)to keep the crumbs in place.

Once that crumb coat has set, icing and decorating your cake will be much easier - no crumbs!
