How did groovy-kids-parties.com start?
At the risk of sounding like a romance novelist (which I'm not), It started with a dream.
A dream of taking my kids to school and being there to collect them at the end of their day. I wanted to be able to be there to listen to them talk about their day over afternoon tea. I wanted to be the one to take them to their after school activities...to be present while they did their homework. Ultimately, I wanted to work from home.
Do you have a Dream?
After finding myself as a single mother with not a lot of income and two young children, I realised I needed to see my situation as an opportunity to be proactive and seize that moment to be a positive role model for my children. I set out to make my dream a reality for all of us. And I kept focussed on my dream as I set out to start my own business from home.
Do you need a solution?
I searched the internet for what seemed like months - it was months - and it dutifully provided me with eons of money-making schemes which I could do from home with the colourful promises of becoming a millionaire(ess) overnight.
Okay, I admit I tried a few (in fact quite a few) of these Get Rich Quick (GRQ) schemes. I bought lists and spent hours filling in surveys on-line. After a year of this all I had was lots of late nights, wasted time, and roughly about $20.00. I couldn't even cash this in until I had reached a nominal amount much higher than $20.00!
Do you have a passion?
I then considered starting an online business as I enjoy working on my computer and I did have more pc skills than ticking boxes! I had already chosen a topic - it would be about my experience with planning childrens' birthday parties. Not only had I planned quite a few of for my own children, I also had a kitty of wonderful experiences of their friends' parties I wanted to share.
I had several questions though, like
- "How do I set up an online business?"
- "Do I need to know html"? (the code used in website writing)
and of course the all-important,
I had very little start-up money. In fact, there were a lot of questions I needed answers for.
Do you want to work from home?
I started searching for a hosting company and came across a website called Site Build It!. The introduction claimed that it would guide me through all the steps necessary to own a successful online business. Skeptical as I was I started reading it. It was created by Dr Ken Evoy, the CEO of a company called Sitesell. The site was awesome although filled with recommendations to start your online business with - a product costing US$299.

- "I'll just do it with a cheap hosting company."
So I searched around the internet for a cheaper way to do things. I joined up for a free web site and domain name but had lots of their cheap flashing banners all over my first page.
How do you get people to find your website?
After trying several similar alternatives, it suddenly dawned on me that this was not going to work if I wanted to own a successful online business.
Having a website on the world-wide-web is one thing.
Getting it to "do" something is another story.
Actually it wasn't until at least 12 months (and many hours of internet reading later) that I once again checked out Site Build It! and, to cut a long story short, signed up for the package. What did I have to lose? Well, pretty simply, it was the best decision I ever made. Site Build It! has taught me step-by-step to build a website and a successful on-line business. There is even a closed forum for SBI! owners - an invaluable community of SBI! website owners who are running successful on-line businesses and more than willing to pass on their experiences and suggestions.
Now I must point out that Site Build It! is not a Get Rick Quick (GRQ) product. My experience had taught me to spot these a mile away. Besides, the difference with Site Build It! was that they weren't pitching that I'd be a millionaire(ess) overnight. They didn't ask for my email address before they sent me any information or revealed who they are. They offered me the opportunity to learn how to create, build, and maintain a successful on-line business and they offered to guide me through it.
That said, I've been building my business at my own pace from my home, with my kids around. In fact my kids are very involved in the process. I guess you could say it's a family affair. Read more about how we do it here.
SBI! offered me a solution.
Knowing that people from all over the world visit and actually find my website daily to souce party ideas gives me such feeling of satisfaction. I look forward to checking my traffic stats on a daily basis and watching them grow!
There is no really easy way - building this website has taken a lot of time and hard work - but being able to make a difference and do something that I have a passion for has been extremely rewarding for me. And I did it with a lot of help and guidance from some wonderful people who have the same dedication to share their passion with the world.
Are you ready for the challenge?
It has always been my dream to be a Work-At-Home Mum (a WAHM) but I never imagined that I'd not only work from home but own a successful online business as well.
And to see the pride on my kids' faces when they see their mum working in the canteen and working on parent roster is priceless.
This is the dream that I focus on as I continue to build my own business from home...
